A young girl has died after a head-on crash between two cars on the Bass Highway in Tasmania’s north.
Emergency services rushed to the scene west of Somerset, in the state’s north, around 5.30pm on Thursday after a white Subaru headed east and a white Toyota Hilux headed west collided head-on.
A 10-year-old girl, who was a passenger in the Subaru, suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.
The female driver of that car suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Royal Hobart Hospital where she remains.
The driver and passenger in the Hilux suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They were taken to North West Regional Hospital at Burnie for assessment and treatment.
Part of the Bass Highway was closed in both directions for more than four hours while emergency services were at the scene.
Tasmania Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of those involved,” police said in a statement.
